MG Confirms Plant Expansion Ready to be the manufacturing hub of ASEAN

SAIC Motor – CP and MG Sales (Thailand), the manufacturer and distributor of the iconic British car brand MG, confirmed the expansion of its new plant, at the Launch Ceremony of the SAIC Motor - CP Plant Project held at the New MG Driving Experience Centre. Mr. Chen Hong, Chairman of the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), Mr. Thanakorn Seriburi, Vice Chairman Charoen Pokphand Group, and Mrs. Atchaka Sibunruang, Minister of Industry, together with representatives from the Government and private sectors, attended this auspicious occasion.

Currently, the New MG plant is under the design phase, where state-of-the-art equipment, machinery and assembly lines will be installed within one of the most modern plants of its kind, with industry leading ergonomics for the most efficient work environment for employees. Upon completion, the New MG plant will become MG’s Southeast Asia manufacturing hub for distribution in the both the Thai market and overseas.

Mr. Wu Huan, Managing Director, SAIC Moto – CP said, “This plant production is the most important business milestone for MG, for not only is it proof of its planned sustainable long term investment, but also of its business success in committing to the Thai automotive market with the MG brand. MG is determined to become one of the leading automotive production companies in Thailand.”
“This new plant is in accordance with MG’s determination to make Thailand the manufacturing and export hub of right hand drive vehicles for the ASEAN region. We firmly believe that Thailand has the utmost potential in the automotive and car parts industry in this region. We also want to positively contribute to this country’s automotive industry and MG’s performance simultaneously,” he added.

The new MG plant will be built on 437.5 rai (70 hectares or 173 acres) of land in the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate 2 in the Chon Buri district to replace the existing 17,280 sqm facility with the first production run having starting in early 2014.

Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, Chairman and CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group, also said, “I would like to congratulate both SAIC Moto – CP and MG on their continuous growth and commend their commitment to enter and succeed in the highly challenging Thai automotive market. SAIC Moto – CP assembled and launched the MG6 which rolled off the assembly line in June 2014 and which was followed by the introduction of the MG3 Hatchback and Xross in March 2015. The launch of the new MG6 (Minor Change series) and the new MG5 followed in July and November of 2015 respectively, and now the NEW MG GS has been debuted. This latest sport SUV has arose from customer demand for a sportier SUV with outstanding modern design. Its class-leading 218 PS, 2.0-litre petrol turbocharged engine with the maximum torque of 350 Ns and a full line of conveniences and 13 safety features, gives full confidence and a unique identity for the driver.
